AUSTIN, Texas—The Gateway Program, The University of Texas at Austin’s retention program for freshmen and sophomores, has been honored with a 1999 Retention Excellence Award. The honor is bestowed by Noel-Levitz, an educational consulting firm in Iowa City, IA.

UT is one of eight institutions receiving the award, which will be presented July 7 at the 1999 National Conference on Student Retention in San Francisco.

The Gateway Program is a two-year program designed to enable students to have a smooth transition from high school to college. The initiative is the result of a partnership between the UT Office of the Provost and the Retention Services area of the Office of the Dean of Students.

The program offers small classes, peer advisors, free tutoring and individual assistance, among other benefits.

Students go through a selection process in the Office of Admissions to become part of Gateway.

For additional information about the program, contact the Office of the Dean of Students, Retention Services at 471-1205.
