UT Elementary School CEO to Take Position with Austin Independent School District

Dr. Ramona Treviño, the chief executive officer and founding principal of the UT Elementary School, has been named chief academic officer for the Austin Independent School District (AISD). Treviño will begin her new job on March 29.

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) serves as the instructional leader for the district, providing leadership, assistance and supervision for curriculum, bilingual education and special education. The CAO will direct the operation, planning, development and administration of all programs supporting students' academic achievement and also serves as a member of the Superintendent's Senior Cabinet.

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement and the management board chair for the elementary school, said, "Everyone at UT and the faculty, staff and families at UT Elementary will greatly miss her, but I can think of no more qualified person to fill the new position of AISD's chief academic officer than Dr. Treviño. Her deep knowledge of best practices in urban education and what it takes to ensure success of all students will be an asset to the district."

"I am grateful for the endless support of the university and university system, its wise administrators, brilliant professors, dedicated staff and loving donors," Treviño said. "I leave UT Austin with many fond memories and the experience one can only gain from a research institution such as The University of Texas."

Treviño has been at the school since its founding in 2003. She will continue as a member of the faculty in the Department of Educational Administration in the university's College of Education. Principal Melissa Chavez will continue to lead the program Treviño established.

"The school's faculty and administrative staff will remain dedicated to educating the students and serving the families in the school community just as they have been the past six years," said Vincent.

UT Elementary School is an exemplary rated charter school in East Austin at 2200 E. 6th St. It is a unit of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin.
