Bill Powers, president of The University of Texas at Austin, and Kedra Ishop, vice provost and director of admissions, will travel to El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday, Sept. 28 to participate in the 5:30 p.m. grand opening of the university's new El Paso Admissions Center.
The 1,775-square-foot center, located at 10801 Gateway West, Suite 300 in El Paso, will offer admissions information and answers to questions from students and their parents about The University of Texas at Austin.
Counselors from the center will visit area high schools and participate in college fairs and other events to inform students about opportunities available at the university and assist them with the application process, said Michael Talamantes, director of the El Paso Admissions Center. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
"The El Paso Admissions Center is a valuable resource for the El Paso community," Talamantes said. "Our services will help foster the university's mission for diversity and quality. Longhorn pride will shine even brighter with our outreach initiatives and center-sponsored events for prospective students and their parents."
Also attending the ceremony will be Student Government President Natalie Butler; Tom Melecki, director of Student Financial Services; and Nadine Kelley, program coordinator for Housing and Food Services. Hook 'Em the mascot also is scheduled to make an appearance.
"Attending The University of Texas at Austin is a life-changing experience and one to which students across Texas should have access," Powers said. "Our new admissions center in El Paso will help us reach the best and brightest from all parts of the state and all walks of life. This will make our student body -- and our entire university -- stronger."
"The Office of Admissions is excited to bring a local and full-time presence to the El Paso and lower West Texas communities," Ishop said. "The opening of this center continues the university's commitment to personally serve the farthest reaches of our state and to provide information and access to those who want to further their education at The University of Texas at Austin."
The university also has admissions centers in Lubbock, Longview, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley and New York.
George White, president of the El Paso chapter of the Texas Exes alumni association, and other chapter members also will attend the ceremony.
