The Politics of Ideas

It’s not enough to come up with a brilliant idea. You also need to galvanize support through effective advocacy. History is replete with examples of brilliant ideas not being implemented because the organization’s decision makers didn’t buy into them. Even worse, the world is full of bad ideas that were successfully championed within their organization and got the green light.

Communication Studies Professor John Daly was the inaugural Longhorn Network Game Changers speaker. His talk highlighted what he’s learned from studying some of the most successful communicators in the world, from politicians and educators, to business and nonprofit leaders, to religious and social leaders.

About John Daly

Daly is the Liddell Professor of Communication, TCB Professor of Management and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on advocacy and influence, interpersonal communication and organizational behavior. While at the university, he has won every major award given on campus for undergraduate teaching. Most recently, he was recognized for his teaching by the University of Texas System’s Board of Regents.

Daly has been the president of the National Communication Association, chair of the Council of Communication Associations and served on the Board of Directors of both the International Customer Service Association and the International Communication Association. He has been the editor of two academic journals and served on the editorial boards of numerous journals, and is one of fewer than 70 scholars in the world who is a Fellow of the International Communication Association. Fellows are recognized for their major scholarly contributions. He is also one of fewer than 60 people worldwide named as Distinguished Scholars by the National Communication Association.

Daly has published more than 100 research articles and chapters in scholarly periodicals and produced eight books including “The Handbook of Interpersonal Communication” (SAGE 2011) and “Advocacy: Championing Innovation and Influencing Others” (Yale 2011). His work has also appeared in any number of popular outlets including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Investor’s Business Daily, and the New York Times.

He has also worked with numerous public and private organizations on topics related to communication, advocacy and leadership. These include such major firms as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Merck, Pfizer, Seton, USAA, Union Pacific, Kraft, Apple, HP, IBM, Shell, ExxonMobil, Texas Instruments, 3M and Dell. In addition, he spent time working at the White House some years ago.

Daly received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his Ph.D. from Purdue. He has taught at The University of Texas at Austin since 1977.

UT Game Changers brings The University of Texas at Austin’s intellectual talent beyond the classroom with an hour-long show to be broadcast on The Longhorn Network along with a Web-only version, above.
