EVENT: UT Remembers will honor more than 170 members of The University of Texas at Austin community — students and current and retired faculty members and staffers — who passed away during the previous year.

WHEN: Friday, May 8, 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: At 8:45 a.m., flags on the university’s Main Mall south of the Tower will be ceremoniously lowered to half-staff. The UT Remembers service will be at 2 p.m. in the Tower Garden, north of the Tower and Main Building.

WHO MAY ATTEND: Open to the public and media.

BACKGROUND: UT Remembers brings together families, friends, colleagues and co-workers to honor those who died during the past year and to reflect upon who they were, what they gave to the institution and what they meant to the people whose lives they touched.

The annual day of remembrance began in 1998 as an initiative of the UT Cares Committee. UT Remembers includes an informational session on stages of grief, a service where the names of people being remembered are read aloud, followed by a Tower bell toll of tribute and the darkening of the Tower lights from dusk to dawn in honor of those lost.

For a full schedule and activity locations, visit the UT Remembers website.

Event parking is available in the San Antonio Parking Garage at 2420 San Antonio St. Shuttle service will run from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. between the parking garage and UT Remembers.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Parking for satellite and microwave trucks providing coverage of the UT Remembers flag-lowering ceremony will be provided on Inner Campus Drive in spaces just east of the steps from the Main Plaza. Other media covering the flag ceremony or later service may secure parking from the guard booth at 24th and Whitis streets.
