Army ROTC co-ed team from The University of Texas at Austin wins overall first place trophy in tri-state competition

The Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at The University of Texas at Austin won first place overall in the 2006 Co-ed Ranger Challenge Oct. 13-15 at Camp Bullis, a United States Army camp 17 miles northwest of San Antonio.

AUSTIN, Texas—The Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at The University of Texas at Austin won first place overall in the 2006 Co-ed Ranger Challenge Oct. 13-15 at Camp Bullis, a United States Army camp 17 miles northwest of San Antonio.

In addition to winning overall honors based on its total score from competition in various categories, the team of three women and six men also won first place in the Physical Fitness Category, said Lt. Col. Kevin A. Vizzarri. The competition involved 32 teams from Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Vizzarri said The University of Texas at Austin team has been training year-round but the effort has intensified this fall in preparation for the competition that helps prepare them for a leadership assessment course at Ft. Lewis in the state of Washington that is held as a summer camp for cadets between their junior and senior years.

“This exemplifies the hard work and dedication so often demonstrated by our cadets,” said the team’s coach, Sgt. First Class Joshua Gamboa. “It further solidifies our standard of excellence.”

Cadet Alexandra Vane. a kinesiology major, was captain of the co-ed team that won the first place overall Ranger Challenge trophy for The University of Texas at Austin. The team’s other first place award in the Physical Fitness Category involved push-ups, sit-ups and running activities.
