Austin Independent School District Superintendent Holds Arts Education Talk on Campus, April 13

Event: Austin Independent School District Superintendent Meria Carstarphen will be the inaugural guest speaker for the College of Fine Arts‘ new art education talk series, “A Chat With…” She will talk about her teaching experiences, vision for fine arts and the rewards of a teaching career. This event is free and open to the public.

Background: This semester the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin introduces “A Chat With,” a late afternoon get-together where College of Fine Arts students and faculty have an opportunity to mingle and chat with a prominent public school educator. 

Carstarphen is in her first year as superintendent of the Austin Independent School District. She has been the superintendent of St. Paul Public Schools in Minnesota and has held positions for public school systems in Tennessee, Ohio and the District of Columbia. Carstarphen’s professional experience includes teaching Spanish and documentary photography at the middle school level, as well as elementary education in Spain and Venezuela. She holds her doctorate in administration, planning and social policy with a concentration in urban superintendency from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
