Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. to be celebrated Monday, Jan. 19 at The University of Texas at Austin

The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated at The University of Texas at Austin beginning at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19 with a program in Jester Auditorium A121A. The program theme is ‘A Drum Major for Righteousness.’

AUSTIN, Texas—The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated at The University of Texas at Austin beginning at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19 with a program in Jester Auditorium A121A. The program theme is “A Drum Major for Righteousness.”

Marlen Whitley, an Austin attorney and an alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin, will be the keynote speaker. The program also will feature performances by the UT Innervisions Gospel Choir, Texas Academy of Excellence Charter School and Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church Spiritual Expressions, said Brenda Burt of the university’s Multicultural Information Center.

The program will be followed by a dedication ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue on the East Mall. Flowers will be placed around the statue.

Dr. James Vick, vice president for student affairs, will be among the university officials at the event.

Other events in the Austin area on Monday celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. will include a city-wide event at the state Capitol that will be followed by a march from the Capitol to Huston-Tillotson College. The Austin Area Heritage Council is organizing the event. Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin, will be among the speakers, who also will include U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Texas Comptroller Carol Keeton Strayhorn and George Martin, president of St. Edward’s University.
