The National Commission on the High School Senior Year is holding a series of public meetings to address the concern that students graduate from high school inadequately prepared to succeed in postsecondary education and, in turn, today’s economy. The report of preliminary findings released in January 2001, "The Lost Opportunity of Senior Year: Finding a Better Way," is available on the commission’s website at www.commissiononthesenioryear.org. After conducting five public meetings across the country, the commission will release a final report of recommendations in June 2001.

Created last year, the National Commission on the High School Senior Year consists of a highly respected, diverse group of individuals and represents a unique public-private partnership among the U.S. Department of Education, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation. Governor Paul E. Patton of Kentucky serves as chair of the commission and Dr. Jacquelyn M. Belcher, president of Georgia Perimeter College, is the vice chair. The 30 commission members include educators, administrators, college presidents, political leaders, a student and a parent.
