AUSTIN, Texas — Mr. and Mrs. Hays R. Warden of Houston have established a permanent endowment at The University of Texas at Austin to assist students from high schools within the Aransas County Independent School District. The Opal A.Warden and Beatrice Shipman Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors the mothers of Hays R. Warden, a 1972 UT graduate, and his wife Sandra L. Warden.

The Wardens’ gift is being matched by Burlington Resources Inc., where Warden is senior vice president and controller. The endowment, including the original gift and the corporate match, totals $51,000.

Recipients will be identified as they graduate from high school and enter UT Austin as first-year students, with financial need a primary consideration. Any academic major will be considered. So that the endowment may provide a substantial award, only one recipient per year will be supported. In any year that an eligible first-year student cannot be identified, the previous year’s recipient will be selected for an additional award as long as that student is in good academic standing.

The initial award of the Opal A. Warden and Beatrice Shipman Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be made for the 1998-99 academic year. Students from the Aransas County Independent School District who plan to attend UT Austin are encouraged to apply for the award through their school’s college advising office or by contacting UT’s Office of Student Financial Services.
