AUSTIN, Texas—The Undergraduate Research Fellowship program provided more than $230,000 for 282 undergraduate students at The University of Texas at Austin to pursue research projects in the 2004-05 academic year.
A total of $232,226 went to students conducting research in a range of disciplines, including special education, nursing, aerospace engineering, biology and studio art. The fellowships can be funded for as much as $1,000.
For the year, there were 317 applications, 103 more than the 2003-2004 academic year. The total amount requested was $303,127.
The fellowships cover costs associated with academic research and provide an incentive for students and faculty to undertake new research endeavors.
The Office of the Vice President for Research and the University Co-operative Society started the program in 1996 to provide financial support for scholarly investigative projects conducted by undergraduates with qualified faculty supervision.
The University Co-op is the primary benefactor of the program with support from Student Government and many of the university’s colleges and schools.
Students pursuing a first bachelor’s degree or enrolled in the Pharm.D. program are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours) during the fellowship period.
Participating colleges and schools are: Architecture, Business, Communication, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, Nursing and Pharmacy.
