AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Mounira M. Charrad, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, was awarded the top honor of $10,000 at the recent Robert W. Hamilton Awards Dinner for her book, States and Women’s Rights (University of California Press).
The Hamilton Book Awards, sponsored by the University Co-op, recognize outstanding work by academics at the university and are the only cross-disciplinary awards focusing on the scholarly writing of faculty and staff. The dinner was held April 28 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin.
Forty-seven authors from across the university were nominated this year.
"The range and caliber of this year’s nominees was inspiring," said Dr. Teresa Sullivan, vice president and dean of graduate studies. "Every year the Hamilton Awards showcase what truly important scholarly work emerges from the halls and labs of the university."
Receiving the $3,000 Hamilton Book Award were research fellow Jon Kalb for Adventures in the Bone Trade (Copernicus Books); Dr. Glenn Peers of art history for Subtle Bodies: Representing Angels in Byzantium (University of California Press); Dr. Martha Ann Selby of Asian studies for a work of translation, Grow Long, Blessed Night – Love Poems from Classical India (Oxford University Press); and Dr. John J. Ruszkiewicz of rhetoric and composition and Dr. Keith Walters of linguistics (with Andrea A. Lunsford of Stanford University) for the textbook, Everything’s an Argument (Bedford/St. Martin’s Press).
By recognizing outstanding intellectual accomplishments throughout the disciplines, the Hamilton Awards have grown into a highly competitive event for university writers.
