Event: Harry Edwards, professor emeritus of sociology at the University of California at Berkeley, will deliver the keynote speech at the McGarr Symposium on Sport and Society [PDF].

Background: Author of numerous books and scholarly publications, including The Revolt of the Black Athlete, Edwards has taken vocal and dissonant positions on the relationship of African American athletes to American culture. He is the architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which led to the Black Power Salute protest by African-American athletes at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City and has long been a proponent of black participation in the management of professional sports organizations. He retired from the University of California-Berkeley in 2000. In addition to continuing his research and writing, he is a consultant for the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors.
A programming initiative of the Texas Program in Sports and Media, the McGarr Symposium brings working sports media professionals to campus to discuss cultural issues related to sports.
