AUSTIN, Texas—Hispanic Heritage Month and Latinos’ contributions to the United States will be recognized in a one-hour special program, Latinos and a Changing America, that begins Sept. 15 on Latino USA, a production partnership of KUT Radio at The University of Texas at Austin.
Latinos and a Changing America focuses on major demographic changes occurring throughout the United States and spotlights a number of communities, bringing to life the stories of some Latinos who were counted among the Census 2000 figures. The program will be broadcast during Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15, to promote recognition of Latino culture and history.
Latinos and a Changing America examines the growth of the Latino middle class and the shifting Latino power dynamics in several communities, including New York and central Florida. It also addresses the status of Latinos in the new South, demographic shifts in metropolitan areas of Texas and California, and relations between African Americans and Hispanics.
"Latinos and a Changing America does much to enlighten listeners on a phenomenon that will have an impact on every aspect of U.S. life in this decade and for the rest of the 21st century," said Latino USA Executive Director Maria Martin.
Angelica Luevano is the producer, Martin is executive producer and Maria Hinojosa is narrator of the program. Hinojosa also reports one of the program’s segments on the evolving political dynamics in New York.
Latino USA, which has its studios at The University of Texas at Austin, is an English-language program distributed by National Public Radio. It can be heard on 198 stations in 32 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Radio Bilingüe’s Satélite and the Armed Forces Radio Service expand the program’s reach to listeners and worldwide audiences.
