AUSTIN, Texas—The Texas Campus Career Council (TC3) at The University of Texas at Austin is honoring the School of Law’s Action Committee for Career Services (ACCS) and David Garlock, senior lecturer with the School of Journalism, with a 2006 Robert Murff Excellence Award for outstanding support of career services at the university.
The award will be presented on Thursday, May 11, at the UT Alumni Center.
Recognizing that the efforts of the career services individual offices across campus contribute to the success of the collective student body, TC3 seeks to laud the many “career agents” who assist The University of Texas at Austin’s individual career service offices. This is the eighth year the award has been presented, and it is named in honor of the founder of the university’s Career Exploration Center, Dr. Robert Murff, in recognition of his lasting contribution to campus career services.
The Action Committee for Career Services was established in 2003 as a way for students to partner with the School of Law Career Services Office (CSO) by performing employer outreach, assisting with on-campus recruiting programs and receptions, and developing career-related resources used by law students and alumni.
Members of the Action Committee for Career Services during the 2005-06 academic year included first-year law student Jamal Rhadbane, second-year law students Mansoor Bharmal, Anna Geismer-Bowman, Jennifer Brill, Wes Cooper, Kristen Elizondo, Colette Fields, Juan Garcia, Laura Hebert, Roshan Mansinghani, Jacqueline Sorcic, and Tanikqua Young and third-year law students Melissa Devine, Anner Holder and Mitchell Zoll.
“We are happy that our ACCS are being recognized for the good and much appreciated work they performed this year,” said David Montoya, assistant dean for the law school’s Career Services Office. “In addition to the many employer outreach and program-related tasks that they assisted with, their ambassadorship between the CSO and the student body was beneficial in helping us learn about student needs and helping students understand how best to utilize the resources of our office.”
At the School of Journalism in the College of Communication, Garlock developed an innovative semester-long magazine management course that requires undergraduates to prepare individual comprehensive business plans to start a magazine of their choice. Hearst Corp., a renowned media company, judges the students’ projects.
“Dave Garlock has been a tireless advocate on behalf of his students, our services for students, and our relationships with journalism employers for the past three years,” said Matt Berndt, director of Communication Career Services (CCS), who nominated Garlock for the award. “He works collaboratively with the CCS internship coordinator to ensure a quality experience for students and employers alike.”
Garlock’s work has appeared nationwide in newspapers and magazines and wire services, including Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, Advertising Age, the Austin American-Statesman, Southern Living and the Associated Press. Garlock’s first book, “Pulitzer Prize Feature Stories,” was published in 1998 by Iowa State University Press. The second edition of “Pulitzer Prize Features Stories” is in its second edition.
