AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. James Hill, vice president for community and school relations at The University of Texas at Austin, will lead a delegation of University officials who will visit with UT-bound students and their parents from Jefferson County during a "Send Off 2001" celebration on Tuesday (June 5).
The "Send Off" is to officially welcome the more than 100 area students who have been accepted to attend UT Austin this fall and their parents and to enhance the University’s relationships with a wide variety of constituents in the Jefferson County area.
Hill and other UT Austin representatives will arrive at the Southeast Texas Regional Airport in Beaumont at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and will be met by members of the Jefferson County Texas Exes. They will be transported to the Beaumont home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Funchess, 170 Central Caldwood, for a pre-Send-Off reception. Members of the delegation will be available for news media interviews prior to the reception.
The "Send Off 2001" celebration, sponsored by the Jefferson County Texas Exes, will begin at 6 p.m.
Traveling with Hill will be representatives from UT Austin offices of admissions, alumni affairs, financial aid, housing and public affairs who can answer questions from students and parents regarding the transition for these high school graduates to a university environment. Student body President Matt Hammond also will speak to the students.
The idea for these celebrations began in the Rio Grande Valley about nine years ago and has expanded to other cities in Texas, said Dr. Robert (Bob) Galvan, assistant vice president for school relations with the Office of the Vice President for Community and School Relations at UT Austin.
