EVENTS: To educate and help students in response to last week’s tragic events, The University of Texas at Austin Student Government will take the following steps:

  • Student Government will consider approving a resolution tonight (Sept. 18) asking the university administration to take a public stance against any acts of violence and discrimination. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. in the Glenn Maloney Hall of the Student Services Building (Maps of UT Austin can be obtained at the following Web site: www.utexas.edu/maps/main).
  • The Texas Union Theater will host a forum from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss the ramifications of the terrorists’ attacks on students of multicultural decent. The forum will be divided into two segments, including a panel discussion with professors from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the departments of Government and History, and a media specialist. The second segment consists of an open town hall meeting to encourage dialogue and constructive education.
  • Throughout the day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Sept. 19-21), representatives of student organizations will be distributing 10,000 “Discrimination Divides” buttons to raise awareness of the need for tolerance and respect in the aftermath of the attack on America. The buttons and forums are part of a comprehensive campaign to make students feel safe on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. Student representatives will accept donations to send to the victims of the attacks.
  • Other student organizations and residence hall life are expected to rally behind the campaign spearheaded by Student Government and post thousands of fliers, promoting the university as a safe place, free from violence and discrimination. The fliers will emphasize the student body’s firm pledge to condemn violence and discrimination toward any student.
