The following is a statement from UT Austin President Designee Gregory L. Fenves:

The campus carry legislation passed by the Texas Senate and House recognizes the individual needs of each campus in Texas and authorizes university presidents to develop protocols that are appropriate for their institutions.

This summer, I will begin working with the UT Police Department, students, faculty, staff, student housing officials, the Chancellor, and the Board of Regents to develop those protocols for The University of Texas at Austin. As part of the process of developing protocols consistent with the statute, we will also look at how other institutions around the country have implemented similar laws.  I will present recommendations to the Board within the time frame provided, in preparation for the law that goes into effect August 1, 2016.

We will strive to create policies that conform with the new law, protect the rights of citizens  — and ensure the safety and security of our entire campus community.
