MEDIA ADVISORY: UT Austin Hosts President Fenves’ Inauguration and State of the University Address on Sept. 17

Gregory L. Fenves will be inaugurated as the 29th president of UT Austin, and he will deliver his first State of the University address on Sept. 17.

EVENT: Gregory L. Fenves will be inaugurated as the 29th president of The University of Texas at Austin, and he will deliver his first State of the University address. Joined by University of Texas System Chancellor William H. McRaven and Board of Regents Vice Chairman R. Steven Hicks, Fenves will highlight his vision for his first year as president. The event is open to the public.

WHEN: 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17

WHERE: Bass Concert Hall, 2350 Robert Dedman Drive, Austin, Texas 78712

Media parking will be available on Robert Dedman Drive near 23rd Street and the LBJ Fountain. Media are advised to use the east entrance of Bass Concert Hall.

The inauguration ceremony and president’s State of the University address will be broadcast live starting at 2:45 p.m. on the Longhorn Network and at www.ustream.tv/channel/utaustin. A captioned live stream will be available at www.ustream.tv/channel/utaustin-cc. The address will also be broadcast on campus cable channels 7 and 11 on Sept. 22. 

Other media are also invited to broadcast or livestream all or portions of the speech.

BACKGROUND: Fenves is the 29th president of The University of Texas at Austin. Before becoming president on June 3, he had served as UT Austin’s provost and executive vice president since 2013. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the highest national honor awarded to engineers in the United States. Prior to being named provost, Fenves served for five years as dean of UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering, and before that, as chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

A community celebration will follow the inauguration in the second- and third-floor lobbies of Bass Concert Hall.
