AUSTIN, Texas The Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation (CSLi) at The University of Texas at Austin is holding a special conversation with five-time No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Brené Brown to discuss the tools that athletes can use to be their bravest, most authentic selves.

Author and speaker Brené Brown.
Five-time No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Brené Brown will speak at UT on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

The talk, “Daring Athletes: Embracing Courageous Leadership in the Age of Toughness,” will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Hogg Auditorium on campus.

“We are honored and excited to bring Dr. Brown back to her alma mater,” said Daron K. Roberts, founder and executive director of CSLi. “I believe our discussion will help shift the conversation around leadership in sports.”

Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston, where she holds the Huffington–Brené Brown Endowed Chair and has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy.

Throughout the discussion with Roberts, Brown will talk about the various tools that athletes can use to be their best. As a UT alumna and longtime sports fan, she will share what she has learned from and about the world of sports and how athletes can pierce the “toughness” veil. For fans and parents, she’ll discuss how we can create safe spaces for athletes to become courageous leaders and shift the dialogue around what it means to be a courageous athlete. Though the conversation is centered on sports leadership, Brown’s message is applicable to all leaders beyond just athletes.

Discounted tickets are available to the UT Austin community including current students, faculty members and staffers. Additionally, a limited number of tickets for the general public are available for $45. For those interested in purchasing tickets, please visit www.sportsleadership.utexas.edu/brene-brown.

Founded in 2014 by Roberts, the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation is the first university-based institute dedicated to developing leadership and character curricula for high school and college athletes.

One of the most important functions of the center is the #iLEAD speaker series, which brings together thought leaders to inspire and engage athletes and coaches. Since its inception, the series has hosted a variety of events for students featuring internationally recognized athletes such as Kevin Durant, Mia Hamm, Shaun White, Colt McCoy and many more.
