“In your sealed envelope are a few words that are about to change your life,” said James R. Korndorffer Jr., M.D., Dell Medical School’s vice dean of education. “A city. A program name. A place where you will take the next step in becoming the physician you have been working toward since the first moment you thought, ‘I can do this.’”
On a Friday morning each March, thousands of fourth-year medical students across the country eagerly wait to open the envelopes that determine where they’ll spend the next few years of their lives. Students are “matched” with residency programs where they will further their medical training in their chosen specialty after graduation. At Match Day this year, Dell Med students continued the school’s legacy of top residency placements while also welcoming a cohort of talented physicians to begin their residency in Austin.

This year, Dell Med’s Class of 2026 achieved a 100% match rate. Half of students were matched to residencies in Texas, with 25% of students continuing their training and caring for patients at Dell Med. More than a quarter of students matched to primary care specialties — such as family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics — and several students matched to highly competitive specialty areas like anesthesiology and Dell Med’s first-ever match into interventional radiology, a medical specialty that uses minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases.
“Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know you not just as medical students, but as people — curious, thoughtful, resilient individuals navigating one of the most demanding and formative chapters of your lives,” said Sherine E. Salib, M.D., Dell Med’s associate dean for curriculum. “Teaching and working alongside you has been a genuine joy. You brought energy, reflection and heart to your learning, and you reminded me — again and again — why I love being part of academic medicine.”
This summer, 168 residents and fellows from 78 institutions will begin their training at Dell Med, bringing the total to 494 physicians in training at the school. The newest group of trainees join Dell Med at a pivotal time as the University builds a world-class, integrated academic medical center in Austin.
