AUSTIN, Texas—Volunteer students, faculty members and staff from The University of Texas at Austin community welcomed new and returning students this fall semester by helping them move into their residence halls Friday through Sunday (Aug. 23-25).
Mooov-In 2002 volunteers worked in shifts between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. on those days helping parents and students unload their belongings outside residence halls and providing directions to the rooms where the students will live during the fall semester.
Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of the university, participated in the volunteer project at 2 p.m., Sunday at Kinsolving residence hall on Whitis Avenue. The event provided an opportunity for new students and their parents to get to know some members of the faculty, administration and staff before the start of classes on Aug. 28.
“In such a large university, when faculty help move in the students, it shows that they actually care about the students. It makes the university more personal,” said Mark Botha, president of the University Residence Hall Association. “This event is a genuinely gracious gesture and it does help our new students and their parents to gain a positive first impression of our community.”
The check-in procedure for residence halls this fall included a centralized process to reduce congestion in the hallways. The students and their parents went first to the breezeway at Sid Richardson Hall near Red River Street to receive their keys and directions to their residence halls. Mooov-In locations this year were Jester Center, Kinsolving/Whitis Court, Simkins Hall, San Jacinto Hall, Brackenridge/Roberts/Prather/Moore halls and the Andrews/Blanton/Carothers/Littlefield halls.
