New book takes mystery out of directing
A comprehensive technique for directing that covers every stage of production from the director’s first reading of the play through the final rehearsals has been published by University of Texas at Austin Professor Michael Bloom. In book stores this month, Thinking Like a Director: A Practical Handbook, addresses directing as a craft that can be taught. Bloom, head of the university’s directing program, is an awarding-winning, nationally recognized director whose productions have been seen Off Broadway, throughout Japan and at most major regional theaters in the United States.
Paisano writing fellowship applications due Jan. 25, 2002
The deadline for applying for the Dobie-Paisano writing fellowships is Jan. 25, 2002. Sponsored by the Texas Institute of Letters and The University of Texas at Austin, the fellowships offer six months in residence at the late J. Frank Dobie’s ranch near Austin.
Two fellowships will be awarded for 2002-2003, the first beginning Sept. 1, 2002 and the second March 1, 2003. The Ralph A. Johnston Memorial Fellowship and the Jesse H. Jones Writing Fellowship each provide a $2,000 monthly allowance during residence.
At the time of application, one of the following requirements must be met: the applicant must (1) be a native Texan, or (2) have lived in Texas at some time for at least two years, or (3) have published writing that has a Texas subject. Criteria for making the awards include quality of work, character of the proposed project and suitability of the applicant for life at Paisano. Applicants must submit examples of their work in triplicate. The application fee is $10. Winners are announced in early May.
