AUSTIN, Texas — A partnership forged six years ago started a tradition that will send the new president of The University of Texas at Austin and a delegation of University officials to visit constituents in the Rio Grande Valley next week.

President Larry R. Faulkner, who became the University’s 27th president on April 13, will visit Brownsville and McAllen on Monday (July 6) to meet with UT-bound students and their parents, as well as area educators, alumni and other people in the community. His goal is to enhance and expand the University’s relationships with these constituents.

“The Valley Send-off gives us a chance to welcome new students and their parents to the UT family. The University has a strong relationship with our alumni and students in this region, and we intend to make that relationship stronger. This year’s entering freshmen from the Valley are outstanding students and we want to help them take full advantage of the tremendous educational opportunities that exist on our campus,” said FaulknerTraveling with Faulkner to the “Rio Grande Valley Send-off ’98” will be representatives from the UT Ex-Students’ Association and University officials who, during “Longhorn Hook ‘Em Up” sessions, will provide information and answer questions regarding financial aid, student housing, admissions, Camp Texas and college life at UT Austin.

“The send-offs began as a partnership between the University and constituents in the Rio Grande Valley to help the University maintain its position as the academic flagship of the UT System,” said Dr. Bob Galvan, special assistant with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources and Community Relations.

He said the send-offs nurture stronger relationships with communities visited by University officials and are a way of reassuring parents that UT Austin is genuinely interested in the education of their children. The delegation will visit about 200 UT-bound students during the Valley visit. Similar send-offs will be held this month in Laredo and El Paso.
