AUSTIN, Texas—The Tuition Policy Advisory Committee, established at The University of Texas at Austin by President Larry R. Faulkner, will conduct a public hearing on undergraduate and graduate tuition from 4 to 6 p.m., Sept. 24, at the University Teaching Center (UTC), 2.112A.
The committee has been meeting for the past two weeks, gathering data and studying the financial needs of the university. A summary of this data will be presented at the public hearing, followed by a discussion and question-and-answer period.
Public response received at the hearing will be considered by the committee in developing a specific undergraduate and graduate tuition recommendation for the spring 2004 semester. The committee’s recommendation will be submitted to Faulkner on or before Oct. 6.
Longer term, the committee will recommend to the president, on a three-year rolling basis, the amount of the university’s core tuition needed to address the budget forecast. It is intended that the committee make specific tuition recommendations for both undergraduate and graduate students for the year immediately ahead and tentative recommendations for the two subsequent years.
Faulkner will develop a final tuition proposal in consideration of the committee’s recommendation, which will also be submitted for public comment in advance of it being submitted to the UT System chancellor and Board of Regents for consideration at their Nov. 18 board meeting.
Committee members have been meeting twice a week since their kickoff meeting on Sept. 2. A Tuition Policy Advisory Committee Web site, which includes meeting agendas and PowerPoint presentations displayed at the meetings, has been created to provide more information.
“The leadership of student government and officials of the university have worked very smoothly in setting up this review process, and I’ve especially been pleased we were able to recommend it jointly to the chancellor,” Faulkner said upon announcing the committee. “I have every expectation we’ll be able to work collaboratively to develop tuition policies in future years in the best interest of the university and its students.”

- Dr. Victoria Rodriguez, vice provost and dean of Graduate Studies
- Dr. Richard Lariviere, dean, College of Liberal Arts
- Dr. Marvin Hackert, chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Budgets
- Brian Haley, Student Government representative
- Raymond “Rusty” Ince, Senate of College Councils representative
- Don Drumtra, Graduate Student Assembly representative
- Roberta “Nikki” Starr, student representative at large, Recruitment and Retention Committee
Non-voting advisory members are Dr. Steve Monti, executive vice provost, and Mary Knight, associate vice president and budget director.
