BACKGROUND: Explore UT, the “biggest open house in Texas,” showcases the excitement of education and research at The University of Texas at Austin, drawing more than 50,000 prospective students and visitors from around the state. Selecting from more than 370 activities for all ages, visitors to the ninth annual event can pan for gold, experience X-Ray vision, deliver the news on camera, get stock tips from finance experts, dance in the chorus line of a Broadway show, glean insights on the 2008 presidential election from one of President Clinton’s former advisers, or test their skills on the medieval catapult known as the trebuchet.
High school students and prospective degree-seekers can meet students from all of the university’s colleges and schools and attend admissions sessions focused on specific disciplines, such as business, engineering and law.
Elementary and middle school students, thousands arriving in buses from school districts all across Texas, will find activities tailored to different ages, from the mock trial of Gold E. Locks to searching for fossils, building a miniature solar car, attending a Hogwarts Potions class in jungle pharmacology, or taking part in craft centers during the Children’s International Festival.
