The seventh annual ¡A Viva Voz! celebration hosted by the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection will feature renowned Chicana artist Carmen Lomas Garza, who will present a talk about her life, career and influences, and an exhibition of her work, at the Benson on April 2 at 4:30 p.m.

Much of Garza’s work reflects upon her formative years in Kingsville, Texas. Drawing on her experiences in a close-knit Mexican-American community, Garza’s work focuses on memories of everyday life with her family and friends. Garza’s papers reside at the Benson.

The exhibition will feature more than 20 works by Garza, all of which are original serigraphs. The works will be displayed at the Benson through August.

Guest curator Claudia Zapata, a graduate student in Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin, is producing an online exhibit of the featured works that will be available later in the spring.

Garza’s talk will be preceded by a reception. The event is free an open to the public. Please RSVP to Eve McQuade at emcquade@austin.utexas.edu or call 512-495-4363.
