Football fans attending home games can catch a ride on the Capital Metro Longhorns Express Bus beginning Saturday, Sept. 26.
The university and Capital Metro agreed today (Sept. 23) to have shuttle service pick up fans at the Intramural Fields at 51st and Guadalupe streets and Barton Creek Mall at 2901 S. Capital of Texas Highway, starting with this weekend’s game.
Cost for the Longhorns Express is $8 per person, and children age 5 and younger ride free. Purchase tickets at the pickup locations, cash only. Student IDs will not be accepted in lieu of fare.
“The university–through its Parking and Transportation Services, Police and Athletics departments–has been working closely with Capital Metro to provide fans effective game day transportation alternatives,” said DeLoss Dodds, men’s athletics director. “This week we are initiating two new Longhorns Express routes, which adds them to the mix of beefed up regular Capital Metro bus routes and public pay parking garages. This is very important to us, so we will continue to evaluate the system, build upon it and make it the very best anywhere.”
According to Bob Harkins, assistant vice president for campus safety and security, the university and Capital Metro began talking about how to meet the needs of commuting fans and decrease traffic congestion around the stadium on game days. The Longhorns Express will do both. Fans who ride the Intramural Fields bus will be dropped off at the corner of Dean Keeton and San Jacinto Boulevard, and those riding the Barton Creek Mall bus will arrive at the corner of University Avenue and 21st Street.
“It’s a good plan all around,” said Harkins. “The buses won’t be tied up in traffic and the traffic around the stadium will be reduced.”
“Capital Metro has a long tradition of providing an efficient express service to Longhorns football games in partnership with the university, said Dottie Watkins, director of transportation for Capital Metro.
“The Longhorns Express will run in addition to our regular Capital Metro routes, many of which have stops near the stadium.”
