AUSTIN, Texas–Two teams of key administrators, led by President Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and UT System Chancellor William H. Cunningham, will visit seven high schools in Laredo on Thursday (Nov. 19), encouraging students to set their goals high and strive for a college education.

They will provide the students with basic information about admissions, financial aid, housing and college life, but also will address the University’s core values and its commitment to diversity. The delegation wants to strengthen the University”s relationship with the Laredo community and to make known its interest in having Laredo area students apply for admission at the University.

“We look forward to this visit to Laredo and its outstanding high schools. It will give us an opportunity to meet students and their families and to honor the teachers who have provided an excellent education for many future Longhorns. We know that the people of Laredo expect the very best for their sons and daughters, and we want Laredo students to take advantage of the extraordinary educational opportunities available at The University of Texas at Austin,” said Faulkner, who became UT Austin”s 27th president in April.

Cunningham said, “We always enjoy visiting high schools because it provides a chance to exchange information with students and their teachers and counselors and to listen to their aspirations and concerns. We also welcome this opportunity to encourage students to stay in school and prepare for a higher education.”

Faulkner will lead the “Orange Team” on visits to Cigarroa High School (9 a.m.), United South High School (10:15 a.m.) and Martin High School (1:15 p.m.), while Cunningham’s “White Team” will visit United High School (9 a.m.), Alexander High School (10:15 a.m.), St. Augustine High School (1:15 p.m.) and Nixon High School (2:30 p.m.). Members of both teams also will participate in a luncheon that begins at 11:30 a.m. at the La Posada Hotel in recognition of 35 honors teachers from seven high schools.

“On this visit, we will meet some of the best and brightest students in Texas, along with outstanding teachers from Laredo,” said Deputy Director of Admissions Augustine Garza.

Later Thursday afternoon, the delegation will depart for McAllen, where they will participate in the Valley Honors Banquet recognizing the efforts of 300 honors students, sponsors and guests toward academic excellence. Dr. Storey Musgrove, an astronaut who participated in six missions in space and who repaired the Hubble telescope, will be the guest speaker.
