AUSTIN, Texas—Two members of The University of Texas at Austin community were chosen for special awards by the Austin Area Urban League, which recognized their accomplishments on Feb. 11 during the Equal Opportunity Day Banquet.
Dr. James L. Hill, vice president for human resources and community relations, was presented the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award. He was selected on the basis of his empowered leadership, perseverance through adversity, being a catalyst for positive change and community service.
Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams was named the Role Model of the Year for his outstandingly positive influence on young people. He has been a powerful voice in encouraging young people to strive for excellence and to pursue a good education.
First Lady of Texas Laura Bush was the keynote speaker at the banquet held at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.
The Austin Area Urban League strives to work toward a community in which all citizens are free from barriers to education as well as economic and social success.
