AUSTIN, Texas—Students from the El Paso area who will be incoming freshmen at The University of Texas at Austin next fall semester will receive a personal welcome on Wednesday (July 7) from UT Austin President Larry R. Faulkner.

The University has admitted about 150 students from the El Paso area for the fall semester. A Send-Off ’99 celebration at the El Paso Country Club, 5000 Country Club Place, will honor their academic achievements and introduce them to Faulkner and members of his staff. The 6:30 p.m. Wednesday reception is sponsored by the El Paso Chapter of the UT Ex-Students’ Association. Chapter President Joseph Strelitz will serve as master of ceremonies.

“The El Paso Send-Off gives me a chance to welcome new students and their parents, and to answer the many questions they have about life at the University,” said Faulkner. “Our goal is to help them make a smooth and productive transition to our campus. Arriving at UT Austin is the beginning of a great adventure, and we want freshmen to have the information they need to thrive in our university community.”

Traveling with Faulkner will be his wife, Mary Ann, and representatives from the offices of housing, admissions, financial aid and alumni affairs.

The UT Austin Send-Off tradition began in the Rio Grande Valley seven years ago and expanded to Laredo and El Paso. This year, Faulkner attended the first Send-Off event in Arlington honoring students from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, said Dr. Bob Galvan, special assistant with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources and Community Relations.

Galvan said the send-offs nurture stronger relationships with communities visited by University officials and are a way of reassuring parents that UT Austin is genuinely interested in the education of their children.
