AUSTIN, Texas—A new master’s degree program designed to help engineers and high-tech professionals learn to stimulate and manage innovation within their companies has been developed by The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Engineering.
This new Executive Engineering Management program, a two-year master’s of science degree plan, is designed primarily for engineers on management career paths as well as for those charged with managing technology in high-tech organizations.
The program’s curriculum will include courses in engineering, law, management, finance and marketing, and has been developed in collaboration with the UT Graduate School of Business. “The curriculum has been carefully designed to incorporate the management of innovation issues facing today’s high-tech professionals. Courses in project management, marketing, risk analysis and organizational behavior are just some of the courses in this exciting curriculum,” explained Dr. Tess Moon, mechanical engineering professor and faculty co-director of the program.
Co-director Dr. Tony Ambler, professor of electrical and computer engineering, notes that the program represents a unique opportunity for engineers to further refine their management skills and capabilities. “This program offers an alternative to the MBA that should be appealing to engineers who desire to stay on a technical career track as they move forward in their careers,” Ambler said.
The new master’s program, which will be administered by the College’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education, involves all-day classes on Fridays and Saturdays once a month and two intensive week-long seminars each summer. Students also will conduct an independent summer research project and write a master’s report. The priority deadline for registration for the course, which will begin in January, is Friday (Oct. 1).
Applicants should hold a bachelor of science degree in engineering, computer science or the equivalent, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale in upper-division and graduate coursework, and have a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination. Applicants will also need letters of reference from management of their existing companies demonstrating their likely competence in the management program.
