AUSTIN, TexasPresident Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and two teams of administrators will visit six San Antonio high schools on Wednesday (Nov. 17) encouraging top academic seniors to pursue a college education and to apply for Longhorn Opportunity Scholarships (LOS) designated for their schools.

Faulkner and three administrators will be on the “Orange Team,” which will visit McCollom High School, Harlandale High School and Sam Houston High School. The “White Team,” consisting of representatives from UT Austin and the UT System, will visit Lanier High School, Fox Tech High School and South San Antonio High School.

Both teams also will participate in a luncheon at Plaza San Antonio Hotel to recognize honor teachers from each of five disciplines — math, science, English, foreign language and social studies — as well as counselors and principals from LOS schools.

“We look forward to meeting these outstanding San Antonio students and to inform them of the scholarship opportunities that exist at UT Austin. We want students to understand that there are many programs that make college more affordable and that the University is committed to keeping the door of educational opportunity open to all,” said Faulkner.

This is the second year for the Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship (LOS) program, which offers student participants $4,000 annually for up to four years if they maintain required academic performance. The program was designed specifically to encourage student enrollment from high schools that historically have sent few students to the University.

UT Austin has committed to providing more than $500,000 in LOS scholarships to current high school seniors in 64 high schools in Texas and an additional $120,000 in LOS scholarships for students transferring from 15 junior colleges in Texas. Statewide, a total of 141 LOS scholarships will be offered to graduating seniors and 30 to junior college transfer students for the next school year.
