AUSTIN, Texas —Recent graduates from El Paso area high schools planning to attend The University of Texas at Austin this fall semester will be officially welcomed as members of the University community on Tuesday night (July 18) by UT Austin President Larry R. Faulkner. The welcoming ceremony, “El Paso Send-Off 2000,” will be at the El Paso Country Club, 5000 Country Club Place.

About 180 students and their parents have been invited to attend the 7 p.m. celebration sponsored by the El Paso Texas Exes. Chapter president Steve Anderson will be master of ceremonies.

“Every year some of our brightest students come from El Paso. I look forward to meeting this year’s freshmen and their parents and to helping them learn more about the enormous educational opportunities available on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. We are committed to recruiting the bright students of this area to prepare them for lives of accomplishment,” said Faulkner.

Traveling with Faulkner will be representatives of the offices of admissions, student financial aid, housing and food, alumni affairs, public affairs and community relations. UT Austin Student Body President Daron Roberts also will attend to talk with students about campus life at the University. Special Assistant Robert Galvan of the Office of the Vice President for Community and School Relations is coordinator of the trip and program.

Galvan said the “El Paso 2000 Send-Off” serves as an opportunity for Faulkner to meet the incoming students and offer assurances to their parents that the University will strive to provide the students with a quality education and help transform their lives to the betterment of society. Faulkner has visited students at “Send-Off” celebrations in other Texas cities this summer and is scheduled to attend a welcoming ceremony for students in the Dallas area on Wednesday.
