AUSTIN, Texas —Students from the Northeast Texas area who will be incoming freshmen at The University of Texas at Austin next fall will be personally welcomed at a “Send-Off 2000” celebration in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday (Aug. 22) by a University delegation led by Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of UT Austin.

The Northeast Texas Exes are sponsoring the send-off and have invited the approximately 110 area students and their parents to meet with Faulkner and the other delegates, who include representatives from the offices of admissions, student financial aid, housing, alumni relations and other aspects of campus life. The students are recent graduates from high schools in Bowie, Cass, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Hopkins, Lamar, Marion, Red River, Titus, Upshur and Wood counties.

The 6 p.m. event at Guaranty Bank in Mt. Pleasant, 100 W. Arkansas, is patterned after similar “Send-Off 2000” celebrations held earlier this summer in other Texas cities.

“I look forward to meeting this year’s freshmen and their parents and to helping them learn more about the enormous educational opportunities available on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin,” Faulkner said. “We are committed to recruiting the bright students of this area to prepare them for lives of accomplishment.”

Dr. Bob Galvan, special assistant with the Office of the Vice President for Community and School Relations, said Northeast Texas Exes became interested in having their own “Send-Off 2000” celebration after hearing about the success of the vents in other cities in bringing together alumni, students and parents in the community. The concept of send-off celebrations for UT Austin began about eight years ago as a partnership effort between the University and constituents in the Rio Grande Valley to welcome students before they moved to start classes at UT Austin.
