UT Austin announces preliminary spring 2001 enrollment figures

The preliminary spring 2001 enrollment total at The University of Texas at Austin is 46,610, according to Marsha K. Moss, assistant vice president and director of the Office of Institutional Studies. This figure represents an increase of 148 students from the spring 2000 total.

AUSTIN, Texas—The preliminary spring 2001 enrollment total at The University of Texas at Austin is 46,610, according to Marsha K. Moss, assistant vice president and director of the Office of Institutional Studies. This figure represents an increase of 148 students from the spring 2000 total.

Analysis of the spring 20001 figures shows 35,206 undergraduate, 9,726 graduate and 1,678 law and Pharm.D. students enrolled. The total also consists of 23,231 females and 23,379 males.

Texas residents comprise 81.2 percent (81.3 percent in spring 2000) of the total enrollment, 10.2 percent (10.5 percent) come from other states in the United States and 8.6 percent (8.2 percent) are foreign students.

The numbers of students in various ethnic groups this spring compared with spring 2000 are: 29,197 White (29,463 in spring 2000), 5,868 Asian American (5,675), 5,484 Hispanic (5,556), 1,500 African American (1,469) and 198 American Indian (211). There also are 3,996 foreign students (3,815) enrolled. Ethnicity was not known for 367 students (273).

The colleges with the largest undergraduate enrollments are: liberal arts 10,905 (10,559 in spring 2000), natural sciences 7,627 (7,748), engineering 4,392 (4,372), business administration 4,215 (4,058) and communication 3,560 (3,522).

Final 12th class day figures will be available in early March.
