AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin, will visit Laredo on Tuesday (June 12) to extend a personal welcome to 55 top graduates from high schools in Webb and Zapata counties who are scheduled to begin classes at UT Austin next fall semester.

He will speak at 6 p.m. during the "Laredo Send-Off 2001" celebration, hosted by the Laredo Texas Exes at the Wells Fargo Bank, Heritage House, 1100 Matamoros. It will be preceded by a 5 p.m. reception, hosted by bank president Apolonio Borrego, that will include UT Austin alumni, community leaders, state legislators and other invited guests. David Garcia, president of the Laredo Ex-Students’ Association, will serve as master of ceremonies for the "Send-Off" celebration.

"There is a special bond between the people of Laredo and UT Austin. This is our ninth year to come to Laredo to meet and welcome new UT Austin students. Attending the University is a challenging and rewarding adventure, and Laredo students have an outstanding history of success on our campus," said Faulkner.

Traveling with Faulkner for "Laredo Send-Off 2001" will be representatives from the Office of Admissions, Office of Student Financial Aid, Office of Public Affairs and the Division of Housing and Food. A representative of the Texas Ex Students’ Association and Matt Hammond, president of UT Austin Student Government, also will be among the delegation.

The Laredo Send-Off 2001 will provide an opportunity for Faulkner to meet new UT Austin students and their parents, and for the president and members of his staff to answer questions about academics and life at the University.

Dr. Bob Galvan, assistant vice president with the Office of the Vice President for Community and School Relations, said the send-off celebration also helps to nurture strong and important relationships between UT Austin and the community.
