AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin, will lead a delegation of University representatives to El Paso on Tuesday (June 19) to personally welcome 123 recent high school graduates who will be attending UT Austin this fall semester.

The students and their parents will be among special guests during the El Paso "Send-0ff 2001" celebration at 6:30 p.m. at the El Paso Country Club, 5000 Country Club Place. The event is sponsored by the El Paso Ex-Students’ Association and Woody Hunt. Jason Chapman is president of the alumni chapter. Faulkner and a current UT Austin student, Alexis Ludwig, will speak during the celebration.

A traditional "Longhorn Hook ‘Em Up" after the celebration will provide an opportunity for entering freshman students and their parents to meet with the visitors from UT Austin, including representatives from the offices of admissions, student financial aid, housing and food, public affairs and governmental affairs. A representative of the Texas Ex Students’ Association in Austin also will travel with the delegation to share information regarding "Camp Texas," which helps students make new friends and learn about UT Austin traditions.

Dr. Bob Galvan, assistant vice president with the Office of the Vice President for Community and School Relations, said the "Send-Off" events were initiated in the Rio Grande Valley several years ago. The concept has been so successful, it has been adopted by alumni chapters in other areas of Texas. He said in addition to providing a warm welcome for incoming freshmen, the visits are an opportunity for UT Austin representatives to strengthen relationships between the University and its many constituents throughout the state.
