Corigliano has received several other major prizes and holds the unique distinction of being the first composer to have won both the Academy Award ("Best Original Score" for The Red Violin in 2000) and the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his Symphony No. 2, which he received this year.
The King Award was given first in 1999 to Dr. Chen Yi of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
