AUSTIN, Texas—Students from Mexico attending The University of Texas at Austin will be honored Wednesday (Jan. 16) at the Texas State Capitol by a welcoming committee headed by state Sen. Judith Zaffirini of Laredo.

The 4-6 p.m. event in the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room will be attended by Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin, as well as other campus officials and several of the 179 Mexican students attending the university. The event is hosted by Zaffirini, Laredo National Bank President and CEO Gary G. Jacobs and Tom Tippit of SBC Communications, Inc.

“Fostering good international relations between Texas and Mexico is important in this global age,” Zaffirini said. “Borders are crossed and dissolved easily today through educational and technological advances. Students who are multilingual, multicultural and multiliterate are better prepared to take advantage of the many opportunities created by cultural diversification.”

“By crossing borders to further academic knowledge, these students are linking two countries that share a common border and growing common heritage,” Zaffirini added. “They are ambassadors of their region and their country, and they enrich the lives of all those at The University of Texas at Austin.

“We share two languages, two cultures, two heritages, but we are one family, one community, one spirit.
