AUSTIN, Texas—The Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin has been awarded $94,000 for a project to increase the capacity of Texas high schools to offer high-quality, advanced courses in mathematics. The program involves building partnerships between higher education faculty and high school mathematics faculty.

The Sid W. Richardson Foundation will contribute 53 percent of the funding for this project, with an anonymous donor financing the rest. The 18-month project, titled “Higher Education Leadership for Advanced Placement Mathematics,” is one component of a broader Dana Center initiative to ensure that a greater number of Texas students gain access to postsecondary education.

Dr. Uri Treisman, mathematics professor and director of the Dana Center, is the principal investigator for the project. The project will be coordinated by Dr. Debbie Pace.

The Dana Center plans to convene a statewide leadership team to compile, produce and disseminate resources for higher education faculty who want to support rigorous high school mathematics programs.

The Sid Richardson Foundation was established in 1947 in order to support organizations that serve the people of Texas. The foundation provides support for public and nonprofit educational, health, human services and arts and humanities programs within Texas.

A research unit of the College of Natural Sciences, the Dana Center emphasizes mathematics and science education. The Dana Center supports educational leaders and policymakers in strengthening Texas education so that every student leaves school prepared for postsecondary education and the contemporary workplace.
