AUSTIN, Texas—A board of directors for the Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program — an endowment created to attract some of the world’s best faculty and graduate students — has been appointed by Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin.

External members of the board are Dr. James Duderstadt, president emeritus and professor of science and engineering at The University of Michigan; Wales Madden Jr., former president of The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation and a former regent and Development Board chair with The University of Texas System; Dr. Christine Maziar, vice president of research at the University of Minnesota; Bill Moyers of Public Affairs Television in New York; Dan Rather of CBS News in New York; and Dr. Roy Shilling, interim president at McMurry University at Abilene and president emeritus at Southwestern University at Georgetown.

Faulkner will be chair of the board, which is responsible for reviewing faculty and graduate student applications from around the world and selecting winners for the prestigious fellowship program.

The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program was created by Sybil B. Harrington in 1987 in memory of her husband, Donald D. Harrington, who died in 1974. The $30 million endowment was funded by Mrs. Harrington and the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation of Amarillo. The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program will provide salary, research and support grants to the award winners.

Four faculty members from Texas, California and Spain and nine graduate students from around the nation were named in August to the first class of the Harrington Fellows Program at The University of Texas at Austin. Awardees who will be invited to teach at The University of Texas at Austin under the fellowship during 2002-2003 will be announced by the board sometime this spring.

The appointments to the board of directors for the Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program are for three-year terms. In addition to Faulkner, the ex-officio members from The University of Texas at Austin are Dr. Sheldon Ekland-Olson, executive vice president and provost; Dr. Teresa Sullivan, vice president and dean of graduate studies; and Dr. Juan Sanchez, vice president for research.

Board members from The University of Texas at Austin include: Dr. King Davis, the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy; Dr. Tinsley Oden, director of the Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics and the Cockrell Family Regents’ Chair in Engineering #2; Dr. Thomas Staley, Harry Ransom Chair in Liberal Arts and director of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center; Gerald Torres, Head Centennial Professor in Real Property Law at the School of Law; and Dr. Karen Uhlenbeck, the Sid Richardson Regents’ Chair and professor of mathematics in the College of Natural Sciences.
