Quantitiative and qualitative measures are used to determine the university’s overall ranking. Rankings of programs, such as business and engineering and specialty areas within those colleges, are determined by surveys of deans and senior faculty.
Princeton University topped this year’s list of national universities. The University of California at Berkeley, 20th in the overall ranking of national universities, was the top-ranked public university. The U.S. News and World Report “America’s Best Colleges” issue goes on sale on Sept. 16.
