AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin again ranked among the nation’s top 50 national universities in this year’s U.S. News and World Report magazine survey of undergraduate programs at colleges and universities.

The university tied for 47th place with Pepperdine University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Washington. It ranked 48th last year, tied with Pepperdine, RPI, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Texas AandM University. There are 249 universities included in the magazine’s list of national universities.

The university ranked 14th among public national universities, tied with the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Washington.

The University of Texas at Austin was 12th on the magazine’s list of “best values” in higher education. U.S. News determines best values by relating a school’s academic quality to the net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of financial aid.

The College of Engineering’s undergraduate program moved from 12th place last year to 10th this year, tying with Purdue University. Its civil engineering program was rated fourth and its petroleum engineering was second.

The McCombs School of Business ranked seventh, tied with Carnegie Mellon University and New York University. McCombs tied for fifth spot in last year’s survey. The accounting program ranked second, programs in e-commerce and management information systems were third, marketing was fourth and programs in entrepreneurship and management were fifth.

Quantitiative and qualitative measures are used to determine the university’s overall ranking. Rankings of programs, such as business and engineering and specialty areas within those colleges, are determined by surveys of deans and senior faculty.

Princeton University topped this year’s list of national universities. The University of California at Berkeley, 20th in the overall ranking of national universities, was the top-ranked public university. The U.S. News and World Report “America’s Best Colleges” issue goes on sale on Sept. 16.
