Record spring enrollment of 49,411 at The University of Texas at Austin

The preliminary spring 2003 enrollment total at The University of Texas at Austin is 49,411 students, a record high for spring enrollment and an increase of 1,401 students or 2.9 percent from spring 2002, according to Marsha K. Moss, associate vice president and director of the Office of Institutional Research.

AUSTIN, Texas—The preliminary spring 2003 enrollment total at The University of Texas at Austin is 49,411 students, a record high for spring enrollment and an increase of 1,401 students or 2.9 percent from spring 2002, according to Marsha K. Moss, associate vice president and director of the Office of Institutional Research.

The previous record high spring enrollments were 48,010 in 2002 and 47,780 in 1991.

Analysis of the spring 2003 figures shows 37,155 undergraduate (a 1.9 percent increase from spring 2002), 10,487 graduate (6.3 percent increase) and 1,769 law and doctor of pharmacy (4.3 percent increase) students enrolled. The total includes 24,752 females and 24,659 males.

Texas residents compose 81.1 percent (81.4 percent in spring 2002) of the total enrollment, 9.9 percent (9.6 percent) come from other states in the U.S., and 9.0 percent (9.0 percent) are foreign students.

The numbers of students in various ethnic groups this spring compared with spring 2002 are: 29,699 White (a 1.3 percent increase over the 29,322 in spring 2002), 6,910 Asian American (7.7 percent increase over the previous 6,413), 6,050 Hispanic (5 percent increase over the previous 5,761), 1,612 African American (3.8 percent increase over the previous 1,553) and 194 American Indian (1 percent increase over the previous 192). There are also 4,444 foreign students, (3.3 percent increase over the previous 4,300) enrolled. Ethnicity was not known for 502 students.

The colleges with the largest undergraduate enrollments: Liberal Arts 11,364 (11,343 in spring 2002), Natural Sciences 8,182 (7,989), Engineering 5,027 (4,691), Business Administration 4,253 (4,255) and Communication 3,609 (3,576).

Final 12th class day figures will be available in early March.
