AUSTIN, Texas—The Institute on Violence Against Women and Their Children at The University of Texas at Austin has been awarded a three-year, $115,649 grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to conduct research and provide support services in the Austin area.
A unit of the university’s School of Social Work, the institute supports multi-disciplinary research on domestic violence and sexual assault and provides programmatic training, technical assistance and public awareness of domestic violence services.
Part of the foundation’s grant will allow the institute to award a number of small research grants to faculty within the university. The remainder will cover administrative costs in creating a collaborative research institute that will focus on domestic and sexual assault, training and operations.
“Overall, this multi-disciplinary institute is most exciting," said Marion Coleman, Hogg Foundation program officer for children and their families. “Not only will it facilitate collaboration across fields of study within the university, it also will interact with community agencies and organizations across the state to improve public awareness about this important issue.”
Community partners for the institute include the Austin Police Department, the Austin Travis County Family Court, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, the National Training Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, SafePlace, the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, the Texas Council on Family Violence and the Texas Department of Human Services.
