AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Felipe Alanis has been appointed associate dean of Division of Continuing and Extended Education (CEE) and Susan Toalson has been named the new director of the CEE Petroleum Extension Service (PETEX), Dr. Thomas M. Hatfield, dean of the Division of Continuing and Extended Education, has announced.

Alanis, a senior-level educator with more than 34 years experience in public education, will oversee the division’s Distance Education Center and University Charter School. Alanis previously served as Texas Education Agency (TEA) state commissioner of education (2002–2003), as University of Texas System associate vice chancellor for academic affairs (2001–2003) and assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs (1999–2000), as TEA deputy commissioner for programs and instruction (1995–1999) and as a teacher in Texas public schools.

“Felipe Alanis has a distinguished career in higher education as well as nationally recognized expertise in K–12,” Hatfield said. “I look forward to his participation in activities within our division, and, more broadly, within the university. He is a trusted colleague in whom I have great confidence.”

Toalson assumes the lead role at PETEX following the recent retirement of PETEX Director William R. Baker. Toalson moves to PETEX from the CEE Distance Education Center, where she was director (2001-2004) and assistant director (2000-2001). During Toalson’s 30-year history in public education, she served as director of the university’s Office of Trademark and Licensing, as special assistant to the vice president of administration and legal affairs, as director of programs in the TEA’s Division of Curriculum Development and as a high school and college educator.

“Susan Toalson is a proven leader, manager and creator of new programs and ideas,” Hatfield said. “I am confident that her skills and talents will lead PETEX into new markets worldwide.”
