AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Mark Bernstein, associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, has been named associate dean of student affairs for the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin.

He fills the vacancy created by J. Michael Quinn’s Dec. 31 retirement.

Bernstein will be responsible for overseeing undergraduate student services, including the academic advising group, degree certification, scholarship programs and commencement activities. He also will oversee recruiting and retention programs and collaborate with department chairs to enhance undergraduate education. Bernstein will work with university administration on admissions and enrollment management, degree plans and requirements, and financial aid, among other responsibilities.

“Since joining the faculty in 1982, Mark has demonstrated a zeal for enhancing the overall student experience through his teaching and advising,” said Dr. Ellen Wartella, dean of the College of Communication. “His experience as a graduate adviser for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the consistency with which his peers and students praise him and his scholarship make him the ideal person to take on this important role in the college.”

In addition to serving as a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for more than 20 years, Bernstein has served in various advising capacities, including director of graduate studies and graduate adviser for the program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, chairman of the College of Communication undergraduate studies committee and the doctoral studies committee (Communication Sciences and Disorders), and a member of several important committees within the college, including the college appeals committee, the faculty committee on financial aid to students, the college student advising task force, the college scholarship committee, the college appeals committee and the president’s search committee for the university ombudsman.

Bernstein earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Pennsylvania, his master’s degree in education of the deaf from New York University and his doctor’s degree in applied psycholinguistics at Boston University. His research has been widely published in periodicals and textbooks and he has won numerous scholarship and teaching awards, including the College of Communication Teaching Excellence Award and the Texas Exes Texas Excellence Teaching Award. He was named Outstanding Graduate Adviser by The University of Texas at Austin Graduate School.
