AUSTIN, Texas—Members of The University of Texas at Austin community who died in the previous year will be honored on May 7 during “UT Remembers,” a day designated each spring as a time to reflect about what these people gave to the institution and what they meant to those whose lives they touched.
The day’s activities will begin with lowering of the flags on the Main Mall to half-staff at 9 a.m. and conclude with an hour-long UT Remembers service that begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Tower Garden, north of the Tower and Main Building. During the service, names of persons being remembered will be read aloud, and the Tower bells will toll in tribute. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be relocated to Hogg Auditorium near the Texas Union.
Families and friends participating in ceremonies during the day will be provided a hospitality room, Texas Union Sinclair Suite 3.128, while they are on campus. An information session on grief, coping with loss and options for remembering will be held in the hospitality room from 10-11 a.m.
The day’s final tribute will be the darkening of the Tower at dusk. As the sun sets, the only areas of the Tower that will be glowing with white light will be the cap and observation deck. All other areas of the Tower will be darkened.
UT Remembers was begun in 1998 by the UT Cares Committee as a the day of remembrance to bring together families, friends, colleagues and co-workers who have experienced the loss of a student or a current or retired faculty or staff member from The University of Texas at Austin. UT Cares is a campus-wide committee formed in 1996 to provide support to the university community in times of trauma or loss.
