AUSTIN, Texas—The Latino Leadership Council will hold its fifth annual Sábado Gigante event at The University of Texas at Austin on Aug. 28, welcoming incoming freshmen to campus and providing them with an orientation to the university community.
The noon to 6 p.m. event in the university’s RecSports Center, San Jacinto Street at 20th Street, will feature music, gifts and prizes. It will introduce new students to city council members, university leaders and student leaders who will discuss life issues students may face away from home during their freshman year.
Jennifer Limas, an Sábado Gigante committee member, said the event has drawn an increasing number of participants each year. This fall semester, about 400 new students are expected to participate in the activities, which will include group sessions for incoming freshmen to talk with upperclassmen about campus life and academic opportunities.
“It’s a hands-on type of welcome,” Limas said. “The student leaders have a vested interest in the students who come to the welcoming event. It definitely is a student initiative.”
